Why be a photographer?

At age nine I pressed the shutter button for the first time, pulled the film tab and waited with anticipation for ninety seconds to see my first masterpiece, or so I thought. Well it wasn’t the result I expected, (underexposed, blurry from camera shake and a rather mundane subject… the plants in the hallway), but that Polaroid Swinger camera gave me the instant feedback that got me hooked on photography forever. It has been more than thirty-five years since that experience and while photographic technology has changed significantly, the art of photography has not changed at all. First and foremost, photographic art is still about passion.

Today I only photograph what inspires me…. just about everything; people, places and events. As long as I have a camera in hand, I’ll find something of interest to capture. In between my Polaroid Swinger and my current digital outfit, I have fumbled with the Kodak disc camera, learned to love the Polaroid SX-70 and became a devotee of the Canon line of 35mm SLRs. Although I could never get the hang of wet developing my own film, I have found a way to "develop film" in the new age of digital; the computer and printer. The advantage of digital technology is the output. After spending countless hours producing the perfectly exposed and balanced print, I can now understand the joy experienced by photographers who develop their prints in a traditional darkroom.

These days, sharing my photographic experiences is one of the most fulfilling things I do! After more than thirty-five years on my own, I now have a teenage daughter who shares my love of the art of photography. Please enter the site, browse and let me share my experiences with you as well.
